There are a number of pathways for transition, these pathways are not the only options.
Pathway 1 - Your GP can refer you to the Gender Service at Royal Brisbane & Womens Hospital (RBWH) via the usual outpatient referral process ( a letter to Metro North Central Referral Hub.) This is a free public service. You will be referred back to your GP or another trans-friendly GP afterwards.

Pathway 2 - Gender-experienced GPs (GP hormone prescribers) will do gender assessment at their private practices. You can book these appointments by phoning the practice. The process will always be more efficient for you if you have a letter from a Mental Health Professional for the GP. A gap will be charged on top of Medicare.
There are a number of options for seeing a doctor regarding gender affirming care in the Brisbane region , please contact one of the below clinics to discuss appointment bookings.
Clinic 30 – 07 3017 1777
Holdsworth House Medical – 07 3894 0794
Stonewall Medical Centre – 07 3857 1222
Gladstone Road Medical Centre – 07 3844 9599
Things that may make your transition journey easier.
There may be a wait for an initial appointment. During this time these is much you can do to prepare for a major life change.
You may want to get fitter, have a general health check, a sexual health check and Cervical screen (if appropriate), stop smoking, lose weight, have facial hair treatment, think about/plan disclosures, think about/plan work direction, talk to a counsellor. You may want to think about preserving your fertility. If so, contact Rainbow Fertility.
Write a brief (1-2 pages) life story for the doctors. Cultivate a sympathetic GP. Even if they don’t know anything about gender identity, it saves duplicating some medical tests, and your treatment will be safer if fully disclosed to all providers.
See a psychologist about any stressful transition issues such as anxiety, depression, grief and loss, lack of confidence, past childhood trauma, current relationships and disclosures, substance problems, vocational direction, housing and financial concerns.
Plan your disclosures. Consider your future lifestyle and employment strategies. All these impact on the success of transition, and can be helped by any community psychologist (under a mental health plan) while you are waiting.
